El Camino de Santiago, día 16

Santiago de Compostela a O Grove, 76km con 560m desnivel acumulado

Esta mañana, nos despertamos con más incertidumbre sobre la furgoneta y con llovizna que se hacía cada vez más en lluvia. Haber cumplido el camino tradicional en Santiago y haber recibido la Compostela, no había muchas ganas de empaparnos y aún había dudas de continuar hasta O Grove. Pero la reserva de alojamiento siguió a 76km y dos ciclistas (los dos organizadores, o sea yo y mi gran compañero de viaje) seguimos con ganas de cumplir el viaje "de costa a costa". Los dos emprendemos la última etapa. Los demás se fueron a la estación de tren para cortar 2/3 del viaje. Pero se enfrentaron con el capricho de Renfe que se negó dejarlos subir con bicis. Mientras tanto, nuestro conductor supo que la furgoneta no se pudo reparar. Entonces pasaron algunas horas peleando con RACC y con la compañía de alquiler de la furgoneta para organizar un segundo coche de alquiler. Los dos sufrimos la etapa más difícil del viaje. Dentro de poco, nos empapamos y tuvimos un pinchazo. Llevamos botas llenas de agua y nos enfrentamos con fuertes vientos en contra. Tuvimos otro pinchazo y usamos el último recambio. Pero los dos superamos todo para llegar a la costa y a O Grove. Pero aún no había llegado los demás y no tuvimos ni un cambio de ropa. Fuimos al hotel, nos duchamos, y pasamos la tarde en la habitación hasta la llegada de los demás. Después quedamos con dos otros ciclistas de vacaciones en O Grove para cenar, tomar copas, y para celebrar lo logrado. ¡ENHORABUENA a todos los ciclistas! Estoy muy orgulloso que nadie perdió ni un kilómetro del viaje hasta Santiago. ¡SOIS TODOS CAMPEONES! :D

This morning, we awoke to more uncertainty about the van and to drizzle that was becaming rain. Having completed the traditional Camino in Santiago and having received the Compostela, there was little desire to get soaked and there even were doubts about continuing to O Grove. But the reserved accommodation remained 76km away and two riders (the two organizers, that is me and my great traveling companion) wanted to complete the trip "from coast to coast." The two of us set off on the last stage. The others went to the train station to cut two thirds of the trip. But they were confronted with the caprice of Renfe who refused to let them board with bikes. Meanwhile, our driver learned that the van could not be repaired. Thus they spent several hours fighting with RACC and the rental company of the van to organize a second rental car. The two of us suffered the most difficult stage of the journey. Soon, we got soaked and we had a puncture. We had shoes full of water and we faced strong headwinds. We had another puncture and used our last spare. But we overcame everything to get to the coast and to O Grove. The others had not yet arrived and we did not have a change of clothes. We went to the hotel, showered, and spent the afternoon in the room until the others arrived. Then we met two other cyclists on holiday in O Grove for dinner and drinks and to celebrate our accomplishment. CONGRATULATIONS to all the cyclists! I'm very proud that nobody missed even one kilometer of the trip to Santiago. YOU ARE ALL CHAMPIONS! :D

Melide a Santiago de Compostela, 57km con 800m desnivel acumulado

Ayer sábado por la tarde, realizamos un nuevo problema con la furgoneta: volvió a no arrancar y la vimos llevada por una grúa a un taller en Santiago. Esta mañana RACC nos mandó un taxi para llevar a nuestro conductor con nuestras maletas de Melide a Santiago para recoger un vehículo de reemplazo temporal. A ver si el problema se puede resolver mañana lunes. Los ciclistas emprendemos la etapa como normal pero bajo llovizna. Como ayer, la etapa consistió de una serie de altibajos. Pero la cumplimos sin dificultad y llegamos a la primera de dos metas: la catedral de Santiago. Más tarde fuimos a recoger la Compostela por cumplir el Camino.

Yesterday afternoon Saturday, we had a new problem with the van: once again it would not start and we saw it towed to a repair shop in Santiago. This morning RACC sent a taxi to take our driver and our suitcases from Melide to Santiago to pick up a temporary replacement vehicle. Let's see if the problem can be resolved tomorrow Monday. We cyclists undertook the stage as usual but with drizzle. Like yesterday, the stage consisted of a series of ups and downs. But we completed it without difficulty and arrived at the first of two goals: the cathedral of Santiago. Later we went to collect the Compostela for completing "el Camino".

Sarria a Melide, 63km con 1020m desnivel acumulado

Para ciclistas, Galicia es una serie de altibajos y no sabe mucho de llanos. Hoy cumplimos una etapa más corta que el promedio y sin grandes subidas. Sin embargo, subimos hoy tanto como hace dos dias por la etapa del Cruz de Ferro. Es decir, no da mucho respiro para ciclistas con piernas cansadas. Pero el paisaje y la comida son extraordinarios. Empezamos a ver a muchos peregrinos caminando los últimos 100km. Llegamos a Melide, donde disfrutamos de un restaurante popular con camioneros y una buena pulpería.

For cyclists, Galicia is a series of ups and downs and doesn't know much about flats. Today we completed a shorter than average stage without any big climbs. Nevertheless, we climbed as much today as two days ago for the stage of the Cruz de Ferro. That's to say, it doesn't give much respite to cyclists with tired legs. But the landscape and the food are extraordinary. We began to see lots of pilgrims walking the last 100km. We arrived it Melide, where we enjoyed a restaurant popular with truckers and a good seafood restaurant specializing in octopus.

Villafranca del Bierzo a Sarria, 78km con 1250m desnivel acumulado

Hoy cumplimos una etapa casi tan cañera como la de Montserrat el primer día. Pero hoy las piernas no tuvieron la frescura del primer día. La subida a O Ceibrero, San Roque y O Poio es muy larga y nos costó. Pero nos recompensó con vistas espectaculares y con una bajada acojonante. Ya nos encontramos en Galicia pero con sentimientos contrapuestos: la euforia de acercarnos a la meta y la tristeza de acabar este gran viaje.

Today we completed a stage almost as dificult as the stage with Montserrat the first day. But today our legs didn't have the freshness of the first day. The climb to O Ceibrero, San Roque, and O Poio is huge and we suffered. But it rewarded us with spectacular views and a bloody great descent. Already we find ourselved in Galicia but with conflicting emotions: the euphoria of nearing our goal and the sadness of ending this grand trip.

Murias de Rechivaldo (Astorga) a Villafranca del Bierzo, 78km con 1020m desnivel acumulado

Hoy dejamos los llanos por una gran subida y una gran bajada. Subimos 700m a lo largo de 20km para llegar a Cruz de Ferro. Desde allí, disfrutamos de una bajada acojonante de 1000m a lo largo de 20km. Pasamos por Ponferrada donde vimos su castillo chulo (como una escena de Disney) y llegamos a Villafranca del Bierzo. Hemos cumplido casi 80% del viaje y llevamos casi 1000km.

Today we left behind the plains for a big climb and a big descent. We climbed 700m over 20km to reach the "Cruz de Ferro". From there, we enjoyed a bloody great descent of 1000m over 20km. We passed through Ponferrada where we saw its fantstic castle (like a scene from Disney) and we arrived in Villafranca del Bierzo. We've completed almost 80% of the trip and we've travelled almost 1000km.

Sahagún a Murias de Rechivaldo (Astorga), 111km con 630m desnivel acumulado

Hoy cumplimos la etapa más larga del Camino: 111km. Igual que ayer, atravesamos llanos dorados y colinas ondulantes. Había poco diferencia entre la senda y la carretera que siguen lado a lado. A mediodía, llegamos a León y dimos una vuelta a su catedral preciosa. Al final de la etapa, pasamos por Astorga donde vimos desde fuera su catedral y el Palacio Episcopal de Gaudí. Pasamos la noche en un albergue rústico a 4km después de Astorga.

Today we completed the largest stage of "el Camino": 111km. Just like yesterday, we crossed golden plains and rolling hills. There was little difference between the trail and the road which travel side by side. At midday, we arrived in León and we walked around it's gorgeous cathedral. At the end of the stage, we passed through Astorga where we saw from outside its cathedral and the Palacio Episcopal by Gaudí. We spent the night in a rustic albergue 4km after Astorga.

Castrojeriz a Sahagún, 91km con 460m desnivel acumulado

Esta mañana despedimos a nuestros compañeros de paso entre Asturias y Barcelona. Después volvimos a hacer una etapa normal, 91km através llanos y colinas ondulantes entre Burgos y León. En Carrión de los Condes, pasamos algunas horas dando una vuelta de los sitios historicos, comiendo y relajando. En Sahagún, pasamos la noche en un albergue con un dormitorio de 64 literas todas ocupadas, o sea que no conseguimos dormir mucho.

This morning we said goodbye to our companions travelling between Asturias and Barcelona. Afterward we rode a normal stage again, 91km across plains and undulating hills between Burgos and León. In Carrión de los Condes, we spent several hours walking around the historical sites, eating, and relaxing. In Sahagún, we spent the night in an albergue with a dormitory of 64 bunkbeds all occupied, or rather we didn't manage to sleep much.

El Camino de Santiago, día 9

Burgos a Castrojeriz, 50km con 300m desnivel acumulado

Hoy fue la segunda de dos etapas cortas. Por eso, dormimos tarde y salimos tarde. Con los dos que llegaron ayer, partimos en dos grupos: uno de carretera y otro de la senda. Ir en la senda cuesta más pero da una experiencia más rica y auténtica. También cambiamos de conductor y este dobla como chef du haute cuisine. Otra vez nos hizo un tiempo perfecto. Nada más llegar a Castrojeriz, dos otros ciclistas de vacaciones en Asturias vinieron y nos dieron ánimos. Tomamos copas, subimos al castillo, y cenamos los 11 juntos.

Today was the second of two short stages. Thus, we slept late and set off late. With the two that arrived yesterday, we split into two groups: one by road and the other by trail. To go by trail is harder but gives a richer and more authentic experience. Also we changed drivers and this one doubles as a chef du haute cuisine. Again we enjoyed perfect weather. Upon arrival at Castrojeriz, two other cyclists on holiday in Asturias came and cheered us on. We had drinks, climbed up to the castle, and had dinner together all 11 of us.

El Camino de Santiago, día 8

Belorado a Burgos, 49km con 470m desnivel acumulado

Pasamos otro día que la furgoneta no hizo noticias. En lugar de tener un día de descanso, pasamos el primero de 2 días seguidos de media distancia. Finalmente nos hizo un tiempo perfecto. Después de una subida inesperadamente cañera, llegamos a los llanos de Burgos. Dos nuevos peregrinos llegaron directamente de Barcelona. Y todos dimos una vuelta del centro de esta ciudad chula y de su catedral de fantasía.

Another day passed that the van didn't make news. Instead of having a rest day, we enjoyed the first of 2 consecutive half-days of rest. And finally we enjoyed perfect weather. After an unexpectedly tough climb, we reached the plains of Burgos. Two new pilgrims arrived directly from Barcelona. And we all walked around the center of this gorgeous city and its fantastic cathedral.

Logroño a Belorado, 77km con 970m desnivel acumulado

La noticia de hoy es que la furgoneta no hizo noticias. Cumplió un día sin problema. Esta mañana nos levantamos con llovizna. Pero una vez montados en las bicis, no nos llovió. Aún así, tuvimos que aguantamos un frío muy fuera de estación. Finalmente hoy hemos empezado a ver a otros peregrinos. Pasamos por Santa Domingo de la Calzada donde visitamos la catedral y oimos su gallo residente. Terminamos el día en Castille y León.

The big news today is that the van didn't make news. It completed the day with no problem. This morning we awoke to drizzle. But once we got on the bikes, it didn't rain on us. Even so, we had bear unseasonably cool temperatures for most of the day. Finally today we began to see other pilgrims. We passed through Santa Domingo de la Calzada where we visited the cathedral and heard its resident cock. We finished the day in Castille y León.

El Camino de Santiago, día 6

Tudela a Logroño, 102km con 620m desnivel acumulado

Hoy arrancamos con otro problema de furgoneta y nuestro conductor la dirigió al taller de nuevo. Aunque perdió dos paradas planeadas, volvió a nuestro servicio a media etapa. Hoy llegamos a La Rioja y a Logroño. Aquí nos unimos con el Camino Francés que empieza en Roncesvalles. Por la primera vez en el Camino, superamos 100km. En una salida normal, 100km sería muy largo. Pero después de 431km en los primeros 5 días, estamos más fuertes y conseguimos la distancia sin problema. De hecho, dudamos que la furgoneta cumpla el Camino más que las participantes lo cumplan.

Today we started up with another van problem and our driver again took it to a repair shop. Although it missed two planned stops, it returned to our service in the middle of the stage. Today we arrived to La Rioja y a Logroño. Here we join "el Camino Francés" which starts in Roncesvalles. For the first time in "el Camino", we exceeded 100km. In a normal ride, 100km would be long. But after 431km in the first 5 days, we're stronger and we achieved the distance with no problem. In fact, we doubt that the van will complete "el Camino" more than that the participantes will complete it.

El Camino de Santiago, día 5

Zaragoza a Tudela, 91km con 340m desnivel acumulado

Hoy arrancamos con un problema, o sea que la furgoneta no se arrancó. El hombre de RACC llegó y la arrancó y nos aconsejó que el problema fuera más grave y que la lleváramos a un taller. Dudabamos cómo cumplir el viaje, cómo encontrar otra furgoneta con baca. Pero con una reparación de 300€, volvió a la vida. Pero con más de una hora de retraso, nos encontramos de nuevo con fuertes vientos en contra y 91km entre nosotros y nuestro destino. Sin embargo, emprendemos la etapa con paciencia y pasamos largos ratos pedaleando en fila india. Los vientos no nos dio ningún respiro pero por lo menos moderaron el calor. Con un gran esfuerzo, todos acabamos la etapa antes de las 18:00 y dimos una vuelta del casco antiguo de Tudela. Hemos llegado a Navarra.

Today we started up with a problem, or rather the van didn't start up. The man from RACC came and started it up and advised us that the problem was more serious and that we take it to a repair shop. We wondered how we could finish the trip, how we could find another van with a roof fack. But after a 300€ repair, it returned to life. But with more than an hour of delay, we found ourselves again with strong headwinds and 91km between us and our destination. However, we undertook the stage with patience frequently we rode "in line". The wind gave us no respite but at least it moderated the heat. With great effort, everyone finished the stage by 18:00 and we walked around the old part of Tudela. We're reached Navarra.

El Camino de Santiago, día 4

Bujaraloz a Zaragoza, 74km con 270m desnivel acumulado

Después de 3 días con un promedio de casi 90km, creíamos que 70km sería un día fácil. Pero apenas habíamos montado las bicis, empezamos a hacer frente a vientos fuertes en contra. Bueno, tuvimos que trabajar más de lo esperado hoy. Pero volvimos a terminar la etapa a las 14:00 y por la tarde dimos una vuelta al centro de Zaragoza, incluso a la Catedral-Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Pilar. Total, hemos cumplido un cuarto del viaje, 4 de las 16 etapas, y hemos pedaleado 340km. Eso en sí mismo es un gran logro, pero estamos lejos de acabar.

After averaging almost 90km a day, we thought that 70km would be an easy day. But barely had we mounted our bikes before we started facing strong headwinds. So we had to work harder than expected today. But again we finished the stage at 14:00 and in the afternoon we walked around the center of Zaragoza including the Basilica-Cathedral of Our Lady of the Pillar. Overall we've completed a quarter of the trip, 4 of the 16 stages, and we've cycled 340km. That in itself is a great achievement but we're far from done.

El Camino de Santiago, día 3

Lleida a Bujaraloz, 83km con 690m desnivel acumulado

Hoy salimos de Catalunya y entramos a Aragón. Ahora nos encontramos en los Monegros y el paisaje ha pasado a ser muy árido. Nos levantamos un poco más temprano de lo normal para evitar el calor de mediodía. Por suerte las nubes nos dieron un respiro del calor hasta el último cuarto de la etapa pero nunca nos llegaron a llover. La etapa ha terminado muy rutinaria, con buen ciclismo pero nada de turismo. El rendimiento del grupo sigue muy alto y terminamos la etapa a las 14:00. Nuestras piernas han perdido su frescura pero todavía no hemos sufrido ningún problema físico. Vamos cumpliendo nuestro reto como campeones.

Today we left Catalunya and we entered Aragón. Now we find ourselves in "los Monegros" and the countryside has become very arid. We got up a little earlier than normal to avoid the midday heat. Luckily the clouds gave us some respite from the heat until the last quarter of the stage but they never rained on us. The stage turned out to be quite routine, with good cycling but no tourism. The performance of the group remains very high and we finished the stage at 14:00. Our legs have lost their freshness but we haven't suffered any physical problems. We are meeting our challenge like champs.

El Camino de Santiago, día 2

Igualada a Lleida, 95km con 650m desnivel acumulado

Se puede decir que no somos peregrinos de verdad. Viajamos con una furgoneta que lleva maletas, herramientas, botiquín, y alimentacion. Durante el día, hacemos paradas planeadas para tomar agua, fruta, y bocadillos. (¡Muchas gracias a nuestro conductor!) Resulta que nos deja enfocar en el ciclismo... y hay mucho. Hoy corrimos 95km pero sin grandes subidas. Claramente hemos dejado atrás las urbanizaciones de Barcelona y nos hemos encontrado en paisajes bonitos. Las nubes de la mañana se despejaron y no nos dejaron ningún respiro con calor de hasta 37c. En Cervera paramos para ver la antigua universidad. Al llegar a Lleida, subimos al castillo -- y como en cada destino, celebramos con una ronda de claras.

It can be said that we aren't true pilgrims. We travel with a van that carries suitcases, tools, a first aid kit, and food and drinks. During the day, we make planned stops to have water, fruit, and sandwiches. (Many thank to our driver!) As a result we can focus on the cycling... and there's lots. Today we rode 95km but without any big climbs. Clearly we've left behind the urban sprawl of Barcelona and we've found ourselves in beautiful countrysides. The morning clouds cleared out and left us no respite from the heat, reaching 37c. En Cervera we stopped to see the old university. Once we arrived in Lleida, we climbed up to the castle -- and as in every destination, we celebrated with a round of shandies.

El Camino de Santiago, día 1

Barcelona a Igualada, 88km con 1300m desnivel acumulado

Después de 11 meses de hablar y planificar, hoy hemos emprendido el Camino de Santiago: 6 ciclistas y 1 conductor desde Barcelona. (En Burgos, se unirán 2 más.) Quedamos en la playa de Barceloneta donde hicimos algunos fotos con edificios icónicos en el fondo. Oficialmente, el Camino Catalán empieza en el Monestario de Montserrat. Por eso, pedaleamos 50+ km sólo para llegar al pie de Montserrat y después subimos a la cima. Recogimos los credenciales de peregrino, hicimos otra foto, y continuamos al destino. No había mucho turismo. Por la subida y el calor, ha resultado un día cañero para empezar. Pero los 6 ciclistas nos quedamos juntos casi todo el día. Ya disfrutamos de buen rollo y buena planificación. :)

After 11 months of talking and planning, today we set off on "el Camino de Santiago": 6 cyclists and 1 driver starting in Barcelona. (In Burgos, we'll be joined by 2 more.) We'd arranged to meet at the beach in Barceloneta where we took some pictures with iconic buildings in the background. Officially, "el Camino Catalán" starts at the Monastery of Montserrat. For this, we pedaled 50+ km just to arrive at the foot of Montserrat and then we climbed to the top. We collected the Pilgrims Credencials, took another foto, and continued to our destination. There wasn't much site seeing. Due to the climb and the heat, it turned out to be a tough day to start. But all 6 cyclists stuck together almost all day. Already we get along well and benefit from good planning. :)
